Dr. Paul Lakeland, Professor and Director of Fairfield University's Center for Catholic Studies, spoke on Church past, present, and future. He stressed that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion but not his/her facts. He encouraged the audience to read Church history so that we do not refer to any one period of Church history as the way it always was. His vision for a Church short on ordained priests is a team approach of part-time ordained ministers, for example, a married clergy with families, or not being an ordained minister for life. For this position, some bishops have accused him of dissenting from Church teaching. Given his experience with college students at Fairfield University, he predicts that they will have no compunction leaving the Church if it does not meet their needs.
